Calculating Plastic Injection Mold ShrinkageJeremy Losek
So, what is “mold shrinkage?” It is the contraction of a plastic molded part as it cools after injection. The amount of shrinkage can vary depending on various factors like material type and wall thickness.
It is the responsibility of the tooling engineer to calculate, and compensate for, mold shrinkage so that the final plastic part will have the correct dimensions when cooled. This is accomplished through the use of a calculation, and some additional “fine tuning” processes.
