Mass customization: Same shirts, different initials

Manufacturing has evolved from the mass production methods of the Industrial Revolution, to the mass customization trend that started with the Customer Revolution.
Mass customization started in the automotive industry – if you couldn’t find a vehicle in the showroom with the color and options you wanted, you could simply custom order one. (Ironically, it was Henry Ford who had contributed to the advancement of mass production with his moving assembly line.)
We got used to the idea of customizing, and started demanding personalization in our other products. Advancements in manufacturing technology, plus the incredible new ordering interface, the Internet, enabled mass customization to continue its growth and popularity.
Today, mass customization has even found its way into custom plastic injection molding, which is also ironic, because injection molding has long been the reliable method of manufacturing large volumes of identical parts, with high repeatability.
